Spiti Valley is a remote cold desert mountain region in Himachal Pradesh, located between Tibet and India. Chandratal Lake (meaning “Moon Lake”) is a stunning high-altitude lake situated at about 4,300 meters, near the Kunzum Pass in the Lahaul region of Spiti.
The ideal time is from mid-June to early October, when the roads to Spiti and Chandratal are open and the weather is relatively stable. Chandratal is inaccessible during winters due to heavy snowfall.
By Road: There are two main routes: Via Manali (popular, shorter): Open from June to October Via Shimla–Kinnaur (open most of the year) By Bus/Shared Taxi: From Manali, Kaza, or Reckong Peo Nearest Airports: Bhuntar (Kullu), Chandigarh (for longer road journey) Note: The last 14 km to Chandratal requires a rough drive followed by a short walk.
Indian citizens do not need a permit. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to travel in certain parts of Spiti (near Kaza). This can be arranged at Reckong Peo or Kaza.
A 7 to 10-day trip is ideal to cover major attractions in Spiti Valley along with Chandratal Lake, allowing time for acclimatization and scenic stops.

Camping is not allowed directly beside the lake to protect its fragile ecosystem. Campsites are set up about 1–2 km away, and you can walk to the lake during the day.
