Bir was originally a small settlement of local Himalayan tribes. Over time, it became known as a center for spiritual learning and eco-tourism. After the arrival of the Tibetan refugees in the 1960s, Bir Tibetan Colony was established, making Bir a hub of Tibetan Buddhism and culture. Billing, located about 14 km uphill from Bir, became famous in the 1990s when it was identified as one of the best paragliding sites in the world. Since then, Bir Billing has gained global recognition for hosting national and international paragliding competitions.
Bir is deeply influenced by Tibetan culture, visible in its monasteries, artwork, daily rituals, and community life. You’ll see prayer flags fluttering in the wind, monks walking through narrow lanes, and peaceful chants echoing from temples.
The local community is a mix of Himachali villagers, Tibetan settlers, and eco-conscious travelers.
